PalmSource CEO to Speak Despite Stepping Down

David Nagel Announces Resignation on Eve of Company Event

Dr. David Nagel will deliver his keynote as scheduled at the PalmSource Mobile Summit and DevCon 2005, despite announcing his resignation from the company on the eve of the event.

Nagel will reportedly be replaced on an interim basis  by Patrick McVeigh, the company's senior vice president of worldwide licensing and sales. Nagel plans to retain an advisory role for the next few months as the company searches for his ultimate replacement.

PalmSource was spun out from PalmOne, the hardware component of the Palm handheld computing line, so that it could concentrate on developing and propagating its OS to the palm computing world as a whole. The Palm companies were in turn spun out from 3Com a few years ago. The Palm entities were orignially chaired by 3Com chairman Eric Benhamou. Former Apple top executive (and BeBox inventor) Jean-Louis Gassee now chairs PalmSource. Nagel is also a former top Apple executive, who was also served as a top executive at AT&T in his career.

PalmSource's stock has not performed well since the company went public last year, and one can only assume that this is the root cause of Nagel's resignation. The topic of Nagel's keynote will be "Simply Wireless." Other scheduled speakers at this week's event include Mark Bercow of PalmOne, Keith Hum of Blackberry Connect, and a pair of speakers from IBM, Bill Rusell and Ken Walker, who will talk about Java development on Palm OS.
